For starters, I'm going to replicate The Winchester Mystery House for my own blogland house. I visited the house in San Jose when I was a little girl, and I loved it, I got it, I completely understood it, and I also understood that while Sarah may have been eccentric, I don't think she was crazy. She was just rich enough to do exactly what she wanted. At least that's the feeling I got, despite what the guide was telling me.
Of course, I will start with a replica-we'll just leave Sarah's house as it was when she died. In real life, my own house has been in a constant state of flux since I moved in. Going from bigger to smaller is great in theory, but harder to do in practice. But, enough of that reality stuff.
See that rounded section behind the Palm tree? The lower floor is a nice open airy sitting room, comfortable no matter what the season. All the couches and chairs are on rollers, to make reconfiguring for conversations, dining, etc. a snap. Pull up a couch and stretch out for awhile, or take a nap. Lots of windows for napping in the sun, just don't disturb the cat-she doesn't like it.
People who spend time here tend to claim a chair or couch for their own-and if you walk by, you can almost feel their presence. Human Being's chair is the overstuffed, comfy one with a blanket tossed over the back. We miss her when she's not here.
The upper floor of the turret is set up for creativity! There is a writing nook, art supplies, tables, a sink and over in the corner-a trash chute, making clean up a lot less annoying for both artist and maid. Instead of a solid door, there is a screen door that invites people in-along with a cat door mid way up. Some door is needed or the dogs would have art supplies strewn everywhere, but it's in everyone's best interest to allow the cat free, uninterrupted passage to the big bank of windows.
It's a big house, we'll continue the tour later. Welcome to the neighborhood!

oh my my debra kay, your house is fantastic! what parties you can have here!
# 13 is yours.
i think i'll put updates on my blog listing the #'s that are taken so far...good idea, yes?
i can't wait to hear more about your construction and place. what a pleasure to be in the same neighborhood!
xo
Good idea about listing the addresses of the inhabitants....good idea in general about the whole project. If everyone lables their blogland posts it will be easy to look them up for people like me who are hit and miss about reading.
I'm getting better about labeling my stuff....LOL.
debra kay, are you # 13 or # 14? which is another way of asking are you on the same side of the street as marion and me (odd #'s) or across the street...
:)
I'm definitely an ODD number....LOL.
(One of the reasons why I bought the house I live in was (sadly) because I loved the address 2525 just seems like such a cool number).
I once moved across the street from myself-from 1812 to 1813 (not for the number though-it was a bigger duplex with a bigger yard, same owner).
I love your fabulous house, Debra Kay. I think it's big enough to hold an entire neighborhood of people. I love that you have a turret studio, like my pink Victorian does. Great minds think alike. Welcome to the best neighborhood in Cyberspace! Blessings!
ha ha are you nuts? imagine trying to clean this place....and you would lose oliver and the dogs...could i rent the attic, just think a 'room with a view' tee hee.
Here on Blogland Lane we have a staff-but you can have your own wing if you like-with or without a kitchen.
I love turrets!!!
I'm for sure coming over to play and color ;)
I always wanted a turret-I almost rented an apartment with one-but the turret was the only thing I liked. Putting a bay window in front of this house I live in was an option-till I got the cost and realized there was no view-it would be a "look at my bay window" thing, not an observation deck for me. So I built the pergola, not as expensive or impressive, but it IS the view from my window, and when I'm on it, it's a hidey hole.
Oh so pretty. I seem to have the next to the last week of August open ... I shall be visting then for the week. Perhaps we could work out a trade; I'm just down the lane at #26.
Very opulent Ms K. Being an ignorant antipodean, I don't know the house. You must post more and tell it's story. I love a good turret!
Hello neighbour, nice to meet you ... I think I know of this house - is she the lady who kept adding rooms, for years and years? From memory some doors lead directly to nowhere but a neck breaking fall ?
I like that you've given thought for a cat door to access the windows.
I'm at No 53*!*
Intersting place you have here. I can't wait for the invitation to have a painting/creating party in that turret room.
Oh, the Mystery House...I've been there! And to have one on the Lane, along with Dragonfly's pink mansion, what a bit of mystery neighborhood it will be.
pretTy neat deb, but was hoping for a guided tour, inside and out ;)
Patience wolf, patience. It takes a little while to build a house...
Wow! Terrific place you have there! I guess I'm not the only one who considered taking #13 as my address, but you beat me to it, I see.
:0)
So glad we'll be neighbors. Stop by my little cottage any time!
I tried to react on the Blogland Lane Blog, but the security settings seem to be too high there for my browser, I got bounced.
So I'll try here.
I like your place, it has character. But it wouldn't do for me, I'd just loose everything in such a big house, maybe I'd just loose my way :-)
But I can imagine it offers you freedom, flexibility, so it has it's advantages.
Good to have you on the lane, I'll look forward to seeing you there.
