There are some prickly pear cactus that do grow in the cold (I have some in Wisconsin) that would look nice in there. Or beautiful daisies would look great too lol
Maybe some hardier succulents would look great as borders. Like "hens and chicks" 'cause it would be like more animals for you! And you have to put a big ass sunflower in there for Oliver so he can enjoy the seeds :)
